Is there any OS made by Microsoft that is specially made for Programmers and Developers?

XP and Vista have both served me well. There is no OS especially for developers, but there are OSes especially *not* for developers - namely any of the Home editions of XP or Vista. It's not that they won't work - they definitely will - but if you are a programmer you will probably eventually find yourself frustrated by the limitations of these OSes... they are not for power users. I have Vista Business on my laptop and Ultimate on my desktop and do a great deal of programming in VS2005 in both (VB and c#) and it works great.

At my workplace we use Windows Server 2003 virtual machines that we log into remotely for development workstations. That works pretty well too... it's not ideal as a user experience, but with the security requirements it's not too bad of a trade-off. However, since you're probably not running in an enterprise environment with hundreds of programmers, that solution is probably not practical for you.

No, There is nothing such as an OS for developers.

The situation also depends on your development team. For example if all of your development team should access a centralised Database, then you should have SQL Server Enterprise Edition (or developer edition - which is the same as enterprise) installed on an OS which is a Server (for example Windows 2000 server / advanced server / Data Center or Windows 2003 Server). I say this because Windows XP have limitations on the number of concurrent users that can connect to it.

As of the VB application itself, it can be developed on any Windows OS. I myself have been using Windows XP Professional with SP 2 and it seems to be working ok.

And yes.. as the post above me mentioned, stay away from Home Editions cause they have severe limiations (for example you cant install IIS on them)

Hope this helped!

There is no specific OS. Any OS from Windows 2000 SP4 forward will do. Suggestions that the home versions of XP or Vista are not appropriate for running the Visual Basic IDE is foolishness. Microsoft lists it as a supported operating system.
