Capitalism and socialism are still confronted in our world. In addition, there are religious opinions (obviously more or less interconnected in political opinions, however) which also affect.

Where does all these confrontations lead us? What is our world like in 2020?

Its interesting to speculate, but the only thing you can be sure of is that there will be surprises thrown in along the way. A big war? An important assassination or two? Maybe Bird Flu wipes out 2/3 of the population. You can see a trend line going along indefinitely and think its reasonable to project that trend into the future, but then some big change comes along and its a whole new ball game. Even some major invention we can't imagine now...think how people in 1935 would have imagined the world of 1955. But if you project present trends without accounting for the unforseeable changes that will take place, the US will be hopelessly bankrupt with an aging, sick, and dying population and no money or health system to care for them, China will rule the world economy, Iran will control the Middle East oil supply, Europe will be on the way down because of lack of oil, the US will be like a Latin American banana republic with 1 % of the population controlling 99 % of the economy and the rest of us living in poverty because we have been and will continue to be conned into voting for the Republicans by Republican owned media, TV and radio stations. The internet will not be free then, either, you can take that one to the bank.

If the west stands fast, 2020 will be an era with many countries enjoying political freedom and economic development.

If the west does not stand fast, 2020 will have much less freedom with many countries being run by religious mugwumps and dictators. Democracies will fall in many of the small countries and religious dictatorships will prevail.

The future of many countries will result from the positions that the West takes during the next two or three years.

Capitalism and democracy have prevailed over communism/socialism when Soviet Union collapsed. China is communist by name only but is one huge capitalist outfit now. China is experimenting with democracy, as seen by elections at county level, but has a long way to go before being fully democratic. The only last vestiges of communism runs in isolated countries such as North Korea (DPRK) and Cuba. When the current leaders (dictators) in those countries dies, there are chances for them to join the rest of the world of capitalism/free trade and prosper.
There is a great divide today because of religious beliefs and this is the greatest challenge to countries in the free world. But I believe can be managed, and the world can become better, not worse by 2020.
So, the short answer is that, by 2020, a better world outlook with capitalism and democracy prevailing, and lesser of a religious divide. I am an optimist.

The US will still be power hungry and at war somewhere. Even though they are the most well armed country and brag that they can never be invaded the public will continue to be paranoid giving the government all the power it needs to invade somewhere.

The rest of the world will be about the same though countries will continue to arm themselves giving weapons makers even more than they now are. An atomic bomb will be used as a weapon at least once by a terrorist group and once again the countries of the world will be hard pressed on what to do. The UN will come up with a resolution to deal with the problem but US will use its veto once again leaving the UN helpless.

At the rate things are going with all the nuke and terrorist threats - if mankind survives to 2020, it will be the biggest thing since the first invention of the light bulb, when the wheel is rediscovered.

A bow and arrow would be met with the awe of the first man-made flight. In other words - designer clothes will be visualized on every mutant radiated bear or beaver that crosses a man's path.

Dating would revert to clubbing a woman and dragging her home to meet the folks. This will put a new slant on meeting someone at the singles club. Substitute "at" with "with".
And you might note - I am only HALFway kidding.

If it turns out that way - political parties, democracy, communism and such will be the least of people's concerns. Survival will be the status quo. People should be hoping that the return of Jesus Christ is the real deal (and I believe it is) because if he doesnt, mankind mat very well make itself extinct.

The class struggle between the rich minority Shiites and the middle - lower class Sunnis will be settled with the fair distribution of oil money to all Iraqis.

The radical Islamic factions will be hunted by their own people who are tired of being painted with the same brush.

All nations of the world will be in fair trade and wages and workers treatment will be uniform giving us a stable economy in every corner of the globe.

All people will contribute to the good of the world and we'll be actively looking for another planet to move to before our (last estimate I heard) 2 million year clock ticks down on our sun and it pulverizes this rock to dust.

Or we might just be a fading log entry in some alien's experiment journal. The planet that failed... scratch that one off the list.

There is no clash between socialism and capitalism since the collapse of USSR.Even communist china is on the path of liberalisation of economy and commercial capitalism. The confronatation will be mainly to get control over oil resources. As major portion of world oil reserves are with muslim countries and power with Christians dominated USA and allies, major confrontation will be between USA and Muslim countries.Religiously it means between Muslims and Christians.Since there are no world powers among Muslim countries ,fundamentalists/terrorists will take over the fight. The challenge of world in 2020 will be eleminating Muslim terrorism.
2020 may not be safe from personal security angle.

Communism as a whole will play a very small role in 2020. People don't want to work like robots and live the same way as everybody else. If anything, the world will become even more capitalistic. Personally I think smaller countries in regional areas will establish "Unions" to have more influence on the global market. Just as there is now a European Union, I think you will see the emergence of "African Unions" and "Asian Unions" made up of dozens of countries. In 2020 there will still be democrats, there will still be republicans, but hopefully they will have given way to the "Common Sense" party since neither of them have any left.

Radicalism will persist in the world and probably be worse in 2020 mainly because of the Middle East: radical Islam/Al Qaeda, Lukid party in Israel, Iraq civil war, Iranian nukes, Pakistan's radical Islamists/nukes, & US continued oil dependency. Oh you can throw radical fundementalist Christians in the US as well.
