All cultures have a cosmology with creation stories. People want to know how they fit into their world. The Dreaming is the creation of the world and all parts of it by the spirits that were once active in the world. The spirits are no longer active but they sleep in specific spots that are related to particular activities. The main spirit in most Aboriginal societies was the rainbow serpent whose mark is still seen in the sky on showery days.

There were no gods in the Dreaming. The spirits had all the weaknesses of humans. They were able to change shape so that many of the birds and animals are descendents from a human spirit that changed into the animal.

There are gods in Aboriginal religions today, particularly the father figure Baiami on the east coast. This is a modification of the Biblical god to suit the purposes of an oppressed people. It is only about 100 years old but people speak of Baiami as if he were part of the Dreaming.

The Dreaming is the mythical cosmology of Aboriginal Australians. Genesis is the mythical cosmology of the desert religions of the Middle East. There are many other cosmologies in different parts of the world. All societies seem to need one.

Dreamtime is supported by the makers of wine.!! The older generation of aboriginals live in the past, hanging on to stories handed down from father to son. Its all they have, they didn't build houses, or grow crops or farm animals. They lived a nomadic existence, sleeping under a bark shelter with their dogs.
Modern day Aboriginals sleep all day in a park with a bottle of plonk at their side, probally dreaming!!
