This is a good thing;-) Building a nest is just his way of marking his territory. In nature he'd stake out a territory, fight off any nearby males, and mate with willing female that came along. (Keep in mind in nature bettas live in huge rice paddies, ditches, streams, and pond there is lots of room despite the shallow water.) It's just instinct, and doesn't mean he is lonely. If you bought him a mate the best case is they would mate, and then he try and kill her. (In nature the male defends the nest, and drives off the female. In a bowl/tamk this goes badly.) The only social modes for bettas male, and female are threat display, mating, and fighting.

The typically bought betta fish is a male, because they're the ones with the pretty colors. When a male is feeling frisky, one of the things he will do is built a bubble nest. This is because this is a selling point with the ladies. He who has the biggest and nicest bubble nest gets the ladies. It's a normal behavior, even though there are no females around. It's simply his instinct. And just a tip, if you do decide to bring a female into the mix, do your homework first. Breeding bettas can be really tricky and deadly for the female, so be careful.

Male Bettas make nests out of bubbles, even with no female around. I have a male who always has a nest made. It's normal for males.

He is building a nest and perparing for a female. When he is finished with his bubble nest and you put a fertile female in with him, he will wrap himself around her, squeezing the aggs from her. He will fertilize them as they fall. Get her out immediately or he will kill her! He will then scoop up the eggs and blow then in to each of the bubbles and watch over them until they hatch--and then you must immediatley remove him or he will eat them...the joys of the mating ritual of the Betta Splendens....
