If the engine or tranny is bad, they should give off warning signs.
I'm sorry, but other than checking the oil and coolant, and knowing what burnt trans fluid smells like, and being keenly aware of how it should run (or not), there's not much I can think of.
Either they both work good, or they don't.

As a rule, any color smoke coming out the tailpipe isn't good.
So, you know, any funny noises, any acting up, stuff like that is generally a warning sign of some sort.

As for the alternator, that's not that expensive to replace and you can have this load-tested at most auto parts stores.

Even a professional mechanic would need many hours to check over an engine and transmission, and even then they can't see inside at how badly the parts are worn etc. Alternator, no big deal.

Tranny will start slipping or shuddering. Engine will start to knock when cold....but this could be several problems....engines usually don't just "go out". There is generally a contributing factor...just make sure that the timing belt gets changed every 60K or so if it's a 4 cyl. belt drive. Older engines...before 1990, would have problems with the timing chain wearing out at 150K. Alternators may start to throw noise into your stereo. But sometimes, they just go out. Good luck.
