I want to go to North America in summer. I'd really like to see both New York and Toronto, but I can only afford to do one. Which one should I go to?
To be honest, I am leaning towards Toronto. My mates went to NYC a few years back and they said it was disappointing; mostly hype and all show and no go. The people are said to be rude and I've heard that restaurant and bar staff won't even do their jobs unless you tip them stupid amounts of money.
However, I've heard Toronto has brilliant nightlife and is a great time, especially in summer. Being in Canada, there is also a certain 'Britishness' to the city that seems to sit well with travellers from the UK.
Any thoughts on where I should go??

You're right, Canada is a lot more British then NYC, but it depends what you're looking for in a holiday. I've been to both and Toronto was great (CN tower, Blue Jays game, very clean, Niagara Falls better from Canadian side), but personally I'd choose NYC every time - it's like being in a movie! It was just so different to anything I'd experienced before, all the little differences in their culture, SO many sights to see (real shame the Twin Towers aren't there now), fantastic shops, Statue of Liberty, and my experience of restaurants and bars wasn't like that at all - Americans seem fussy when they come here because they're used to much better service! You don't have to tip them that much and the food's much cheaper there anyway. And the breakfasts - oh my god! Maybe you could split the holiday in 2? But it's NYC for me - I'd go back tomorrow!

Toronto's certainly a lot less expensive than NYC but it's also only a quarter of the size. I live in Toronto and have visited NYC many times. You can't beat the nightlife of NYC but it's very expensive and can be very crazy so it depends on what you're looking for. If you say your budget is limited then Toronto is the answer and has a pretty good club scene.

Toronto for sure. It's very laid back there.
Also, you'll have no trouble getting a good pint of beer in Toronto and there are excellent pubs everywhere. In New York they are pretty uptight: you're looked at as someone with a drinking problem if you want a beer at 3pm.

I'd see Toronto over NYC. I've been to NYC once, and it was a disaster.
