Just curious. When a contemporary Russian athlete stands on the gold medal platform in the olympics ,do they listen to the same anthem as other Russian athletes did prior to 1991 ?

No they do not. The Russian atheletes stand and sing to the national anthem of Russia. The anthem has been changed in the past decade once or twice. The new anthem however does have similarities in music and only some lyrics. Check out the Wikipedia site I will provide.

It's a new anthem, only it is played to the tune of the USSR one. Kinda ironic..
