We don't always need things fixed. Just general conversation, support, or compliments. Instead of saying "oh" ask questions so that it shows your interest in what she is talking about.
Good luck!

Women want to know that the guy doesn't just have a preset default response to her every word. Don't let these things grow stale. Listen to her, even when she seems to only be droning on about nothing. If a woman can observe that you're still listening even when she plainly not saying anything of extreme importance to you or the relationship the 2 of you have, that indicates that you are at least respectful and nice enough to listen, and sometimes that makes all the difference in the world.
We are all prone to going off on a tangent with some wacky inane comment or reaction, from time to time this very human function may be exacerbated by hormones, but let's face it men do the same thing at times. We like to hold out this imaginary concept that we are in control of ourselves and our environment, when in fact we're struggling just as much to grapple with the cold hard world, and we don't want to let it show. That's where the running joke of a female being 'on the rag' really takes root. It let's us keep pretending. No, logic isn't always going to dictate her reaction to what you say after she confides in you, but there is a basic level of respect that must be displayed so that the two of you can understand that whatever tangents you go off on, there is still a mutual respect between you and you're both still listening, b/c it's just as important to us as it is to them, we just show it differently.

I like to hear, "I'm sorry".. seriously.. It took a long time but my husband understands now. He says "I'm sorry" (as in, "I'm sorry that happend to you") and and holds me or strokes my hair. It's very sweet, and it shows that he has empathy and compassion for the situation. Then when I've calmed down we talk about possible solutions. It saves a lot of frustration. I know it's not his natural instinct to do this, but he does and I really appreciate it.

Be a good listener. Ask if there is anything you can do to help. Only try to help fix it if she asks for it. Good for you for asking.
