i do because If you argue that Wilt Chamberlain was the best, I'd argue that the game wasn't as developed and the league was less athletic. Also, he commonly played against much smaller centers, including Bill Russell who was only 6-9 and about 215 lbs!
The game is just different in every era. But, if I'm going to make an argument about why I think Jordan may be the best, I suppose I'd have to start with his 6 championship rings in 8 or so years during the 90s. Of course, you'll say something like without Pippen and Phil Jackson he never won a title, in which case i'll list his incredible stats over the years and point out that he was typically a better-than-fifty percent shooter from the field to go along with his million ppg, but then you'll point out how Chamberlain averaged over 50 ppg during one season alone!
There's really no point because it's all about context. Jordan did things that no one else had done and he revolutionized the game. Is he the greatest? It's an irrelevant discussion that people tend to take overboard in my opinion.

People who know nothing about NBA basketball
Bill Russell has almost TWICE as many rings as Jordan does (11 to 6 ). Plus, Russell won two championships in college to Jordan's one. When it comes to winning, no one was better than Russell, period.
Wilt Chamberlain completely dominates EVERYONE when it comes to scoring. He once AVERAGED 50.4 ppg ( Jordan's best scoring season was 37.1 ppg......Wilt also topped that 4 times ).
He scored over 70 points in a game 6 times ( Jordan NEVER scored 70 points in a game ).
Wilt also has 4 times as many 50+ point games as Jordan ( 119-30). And he scored 100 points in one game!
He also holds the record for most consecutive 40+ point scoring games ( 14 ), most time leading the league in fg% ( 9 ), and highest fg% in a season ( 73% ).
These are numbers that are probably in the unreachable range for anybody.
Not to mention, he was the greatest rebounder in history, and once, led the league in assists (1968 ), something Jordan never came close to doing, and he was a GUARD!!
Wilt was so dominate, the league enacted rules to try and curb his dominance.
Every rule that was enacted during Jordan's career was intended to help him ( hand checking, flagrant fouls, shortened 3-point line ).
Asking this question, you'll get alot of " I do's" and "me, me,me's". But I haven't heard anyone give ONE VALID REASON WHY he's the best, and I don't think anyone can.

Not only did Michael Jordan never win a championship without Scottie Pippen, he never even played on a .500 team without Pippen.
Also, six rings is nowhere near the record, and in fact is barley halfway to the record. I don't know why so many people here think no one's ever won more than six rings.
Jordan led the Bulls to losing records in each of his first 3 seasons. During that time, he was 1-9 in the playoffs, getting knocked out of the first round each time (first round was best of 5 in those days).
Pippen arrived and the Bulls never looked back.
During Jordan's first retirement after the '93 season, Pippen led the Bulls to 2 winning seasons...in fact, the Bulls dropped only TWO games after Jordan's retirement, dropping from 57 wins to 55. Normally, if the greatest player of all time leaves a team, they'll usually drop more than 2 games in the standings.
Bill Russell won 11 championships in a 13 year career. Jordan won 6 in a 15 year career in an expansion-diluted league. Russell won regardless of who his teammates were... Jordan ONLY won with Pippen.
Russell also led his team to two straight NCAA championships, compared to Jordan being a supporting player on 1 NCAA title team (Worthy and Perkins were the best players on the 82 Tar Heels). When Jordan was Carolina's best player, he couldn't get past the "Elite Eight", despite NC being a #1 seed each time.
Russell was also one of about 7 players who averaged 20 points and 20 rebounds PER GAME in his college career.
Also, the Bulls were a lot better with Pippen & without Jordan than they ever were with Jordan but without Pippen. Scottie got the Bulls to the 2nd round of the playoffs both years without Michael... but as I mentioned earlier, Jordan got knocked out in the first round all 3 years without Pippen.
Scottie played on 16 straight winning teams, regardless of whether the team was in Chicago, Portland, or Houston. He retired after playing only 23 games of his 17th season because of injuries.
Jordan's last two seasons, of course, were also losing seasons with the Wizards, but that's because their best player was a 40 year old Michael Jordan.
Michael's impact was based on individual stats. But Russell was the greatest winner in the history of team sports. Jordan would have to play TWO careers to match what Russell did.

No doubt that Michael is number 1. Too many people have tried to compare kobe to michael, or lebron to michael, but if you keep comparing everyone to michael, obviously he is the gold standard.

I do. i think he doesn't really have very much competition because he also was probably the NBA player who worked the hardest too. The only people who couldv'e been better was Dr. J( Julias Erving), Lew Alcindor(kareem Abdul-Jabaar), Wilt Chamberlain, or Larry Bird.

Might be the best basketball player, but not the greatest baseball player. I suppose it must of been hard for him to play baseball, since he has a 4 foot strike zone.
