I'm a complete technophobe, so won't be offended if you answer in very basic terms (as if you were talking to an idiot) in fact I would appreciate it.
It's telling me I need to update, which I do, and it says update successful. But the warning to update it doesn't go away, and even though it says the update is successful, when I go into the status, it says the last update was 17 days ago. So I decide to get rid of it and get a new antivirus program - but am advised I should never install new AV programs until 1st one is uninstalled. Try to uninstall it - get an error message "caunst.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close."

So I don't think my AV is working properly, but can't get rid of it to replace it! Help!!!

you're correct in saying you can only have one anti virus running at a time and that you should uninstal it before installing another.
the problem might be something as simple as a disk error try opening my computer right click the C drive click properties click the tools tab the click check now button put a tick in the box marked automatically fix file system errors click start it'll tell you it can't do it and do you want to schedule a disk check click yes then reboot the check will then be performed before the computer has fully booted.
if that doesn't work try uninstalling the program in safe mode to enter safe mode reboot when the first screen appears keep pressing the F8 until it say starting in safe mode let it boot it'll give you a warning about running in safe mode just click ok then try the uninstal again by the way when you're in safe mode the screen looks awful icons like boulders and no access to you CD drives.

go to security center in control panel and if it is on and reporting "up to date" then thats ok,your safe
some anti-viruses have compatibility issues with service pack 2 so they dont actually work in the security center and may sometimes seem out of date
c/a..computer associates are not a bad anti-virus but when i used it about 2 years ago i found it very easy to use
to uninstall it you need to restart your p.c,then press f8 to enter safe mode, ignore the system restore prompt and continue to safe mode, then go to add/remove programs and uninstall it as normal
it should uninstall in safe mode as there will be less problems with drivers and dll,s
once deleted restart your p.c again and install your anti-virus of choice,a good anti-virus program is avast 4.7(http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html),this is a free program and has thousands of satisfied users worldwide
good luck

You can only have one AV program running at once, that is correct. Delete both of the ones who currently have installed and install AVG http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

to delete the other ones go to
start---control panel---add/remove programs and then delete them

good luck
