The 1938 FIFA World Cup was the third staging of the World Cup, and was held in France from June 4 to June 19. France was chosen as hosts by FIFA in August 1936. Italy retained the championship, beating Hungary 4-2 in the final.
The championship has been awarded every four years since the first tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946, due to World War II.

FRANCE hosted the 1938 FIFA World Cup. 15 teams entered the finals as AUSTRIA withdrew from the tournament after being annexed by GERMANY. the format of the tournament is a straight knock-out competition, whereby teams will be eliminated if they lose the match.
ITALY won their second FIFA World Cup, beating HUNGARY 4-2 in the final at Stade Olympique de Colombes in Paris, France. Leônidas da Silva of BRAZIL was the top scorer of the tournament with 7 goals.
there was no FIFA World Cup in 1942 & 1946 due to World War II. the tournament resumes in 1950 in BRAZIL.

Italy inspite of being under Fascist dictatorship went on to win the world cup in 1938 !!
in 1942,World war 2 disrupted the proceedings..!!
