You probablly mean your antivirus definitions. Think of this as a signature of a virus. When a new virus is spotted in the wild, a signature is "defined" (characteristics) and are sent to you via updates.

To answer your second question, it is usually automatic, but you can always manually check for updates. This again is in your antivirus or antispyware program.

it depends what kind of software you have. Most probably you have Norton Antivirus software installed in your system. Since the people who are making viruses are born ever day Norton and other antivirus makers have to update their software to keep with these people and at the same time they have to update their users. So it is a good idea to update your software to get the latest update. Windows has it own update too and several others software has lots of updates, fixes, patches and security updates
