Probably. Of course a lot of that has to do with the region a fan lives in and the team they root for. Ruth no doubt has perhaps the greatest overall numbers of any player. (Player/Pitcher). There are however greater outfielders and greater pitchers that have played the game.

He is without a doubt the most legendary and charismatic player to ever play the game. Not only was he a great player but he was famous for his great love of childeren and his gregarious personality. The world will never see another like him. As a player he hit homeruns that nobody had ever seen before and every thing he did was big including his eating. He not only set baseball records, he shattered them and many of them are still records today. Not only was he a great position player but a great pitcher too winning 94 games losing only 46 with a 2.23 era. Of course as a batsman was his main claim to fame. In 1921 he set a record of 457 total bases which still stands today along with 119 extra base hits a record that has never been broken either. He hit over 50 homeruns in 154 game seasons 4 times with a high of 60 in 1927 finishing with 714 in 2503 games to go along with a lifetime batting average of .342. He was and still is the Mighty Bambino and the Sultan of Swat!

That is a relative question; Its all a matter of personal opinion. Different people may have different heroes. For example, maybe for some african americans Jackie Robinson or Willie mays is a bigger legend to them, or to people in Japan Ichiro suzuki is. As for me, I think Ruth has the most myths about him and hero status, and is one of the best athletes to play the game
