Is this salary good to live in the UK?

i'm from Italy and have been offered a job as a receptionist in a hotel near London,in Hetfordshire.The cost for the accomodation food included is 75£ per week and the salary is about 12000£ per year.Do you think it's worth moving there?

It's probably about the right pay for the level of the job, and £75 board and lodgings is good for the London area (you would struggle just to rent a room for this in London). Hertfordshire is usually a bit cheaper. What you really need to consider is whereabouts in Hertfordshire is the hotel? Some parts of the county are fairly rural and you'll spend a fortune on public transport to get anywhere vaguely exciting! Other parts of the county are not particularly pretty and there is not much going on. However, if you were in a town like St Albans, you can get into London easily (20 mins to London Kings Cross, through train to Brighton) and the St Albans itself has a lot going on. Do your research before you go out! Get a rough guide to Great Britain to read up on the places you are interested in working in. There are some places in Hertfordshire (as is true of all counties and countries) that you really wouldn't want to end up in! Another tip would be to ask the hotel to email pictures of the staff accommodation, sometimes this can be run down, or you might have to share a bathroom/kitchen/washing facilities with a large number of people.

On £12,000 a year you will have £191 a week left after tax and National Insurance.
Take off the £75 and that leaves £116 a week. As a receptionist you will probably be working some evenings so £116 will go a fair way. You need to check it the food is included everyday, or just the days you are working and if it is all meals.
Your English looks good from your post so do you need to improve it further before looking for a better job ?
Also Hertfordshire is 20 miles from central London so you will need to allow for travel if you want to go into London regularly

GB£12000 salary will give you about GB£8000 after deductions (tax, national insurance etc). Your accomodation (which presumably include gas, electric, water and tv licence) and food will cost GB£75 a week or £3900 a year. That will leave you GB£4100 a year or GB£78 a week for everything else. Moving to the Hertforshire on that salary on the terms you describe is affordable (of course assuming the utilities are paid for; if not find out how much the utilities did cost when the last bill was paid at your accomodation and take that into account). You just won't be able to go out every night. Travel on buses around Hertfordshire will cost about £GB1.20 for a single journey or about GB£6 for a day card. A pint of beer in Hertfordshire will cost GB£2.50 to GB£3. A cinema ticket will cost about GB£8. A book will cost about £5- £8. Travel into London and around London on the underground will cost about GB£11.

£75 for accommodation incl food is good....check what bills you will have to pay on top of that. I would expect you will have to pay for phone calls. About 10 years ago, I rented out my spare single room and I was charging £80p/w back then...no food included but all bills apart the phone were included in that price..

Hertfordshire is not as expensive as London although, being close, obviously it's not the cheapest place in the UK.

The salary isn't high, but food and accommodation are the most expensive part of living here and you're getting a good deal on that side. You can buy drink in the local supermarket and drink at home if you find that you can't afford to go out too often.

I think it would be worth taking the job for the experience.

You could just live on this wage, but you wouldn't have alot left over to go much further than a simple basic life. Don't get contracted into really long hours per week, either, just because you live-in.

If you think you'd be tolerant of slim-line income for a bit, and would look around for other jobs, come along.

Hertfordshire, depending on which area, is cheaper than inner London for living costs.

The cost of living varies in this country depending where abouts you live. I dont know what the average salary in Helfordshire is? If i were you i would go for it. Once you get a job here, the only way is up! You could stick it six months- a year and if you dont like it, find another. It will be easier to get a better job then.

That's £12000 before tax and National Insurance. You need to reckon on losing very roughly 30% in deductions. Do the maths and work out after paying £75 per week on food and accommodation what you're left with. You may find it isn't worth your while. London is expensive and you will not be able to afford to rent privately or buy property on that salary.

Not good. The average UK salary is about £300 a week. It is worth considering if you have free accommodation and you are single and want some time in England to get experience.
