shayshay said it best. I too have the Mirena, and have had it for about 2.5years.It is great. I love the freedom of not taking a pill everyday, replacing a patch every week, or getting a shot every month. And i feel safer knowing that there is no user error such as with condoms, diaphrams, and the nuva ring. I still use condoms to protect against STD's though.

My own experience their are no side effects from the IUD,I 've had mines in for two years, because I literally had a problem with every other bir th control, the one I use is called Mirena.

I am so!! happy this is available,I dont want anymore kids at this time.

Hormonal IUD

The hormonal IUD (Mirena) is a T-shaped plastic frame with thread attached. The IUD is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. Once in place, it inhibits fertilization, as the IUD impedes the sperm's journey to the fallopian tubes. If fertilization occurs, the device prevents the embryo from attaching to the uterine wall. The hormonal IUD also releases progestin, which inhibits sperm mobility and makes the uterus unsuitable for a pregnancy.

Effectiveness rate. The effectiveness rate for Mirena is 99.9 percent, so one woman out of 1,000 using the device for one year will get pregnant. Mirena must be replaced every five years.

Side effects and health risks. Unlike the copper IUD, the hormonal IUD decreases the amount of menstrual blood flow and menstrual cramping. The major side effect of hormonal IUD use is abnormal vaginal bleeding. Some women have unpredictable, light menstrual flow, while many may have no flow at all. Some users may experience a pelvic infection within the first three weeks of placement, as the insertion process can introduce bacteria into the uterus. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics before insertion to reduce the risk of such infections. Hormonal IUDs don't protect against STDs. IUDs also carry a risk of spontaneous expulsion — which leaves you unprotected against pregnancy — or piercing (perforation) of the uterine wall during insertion.

Well if you never Had any kids. It hurts! At least that's what I thought! They have to stretch your cervix to get the IUD in place.
Now I was on Depo for a year before I went on this so I never got a period. Then once I had this place I bleed for about 5 months. Not a heavy period just really light, but annoying! I called my doctor and he just stick with it and I did. It will be 1 year in June since I had my IUD placement. And I love it!
The number one thing that I liked about it was that there was NO weight gain! You do get very moody and your breast hurt and you could get some severe cramps!
But the one thing that I also don't like about it is that this is a foreign object inside of you that could turn into having complications. But there's a risk with every contraceptive.
Just go to your OB gyn and tell him or her that your intrested. My doctor gave me this book to look over and a CD that I could watch!
Good luck!
