are you a beginner dancer or beginner pointe? If youre beginning pointe, i started pointe at age 11 and the shoe that was great for me was a freed.... if your beginning ballet all together leather ballet slippers are probably the best..i personally like canvas but didnt start wearing them until i was in my teens.... But just remember... everyone is different and has different feet. Whats right for you is not always right for the next person. Your best bet is to go to your local dance wear store and get fitted. Most people at these stores are trained to fit shoes for everyone.... Good Luck!

First, check with your studio to make sure they don't have a preferred brand of shoes. They get pretty annoyed if they want you to have Fuzi and you have Bloch...
I would definitely buy a nice, namebrand shoe. They last a lot longer and look much better than off-brand shoes. You should get fitted for all your dance shoes. Beginners should have leather, full sole shoes, because you have to work harder to point nicely, and also they're much more durable than canvas. Common brands are Capezio Daisy and Bloch Dansoft. I have Daisies, and I've noticed that the canvas lining likes to come unglued after a while, but my friend has had them for years, and the leather is still good (but the lining is unglued and she's worn holes in it). I don't know much about the Blochs, but they're rated very well on discountdance.com. Good luck!
Edit: Forgot to mention that the Capezio colour is generally better. It matches tights well, and the new verson of Daisy has thicker elastic, which is important to look for. Thin elastic is really ugly when it gets stretched out and curly, and the shoe won't stay on your foot nicely on releve.

Ballet slippers come in leather or canvas, it's a personal preference. I tend to go with leather, I like the feel of it better. They even have some that have a lycra heel, it's supposed to hold to your foot better.
You can get a regular sole or a split sole. Once again it's personal preference. I tend to go with a split sole, I like the look and feel of it when the foot is pointed.
I would start with something like Bloch's Dansoft or Capezio Daisy or Leo's Airabasque. You need to try them on at a dance shop if it's your first pair. The shoe should fit like a glove, there should not be any extra shoe hanging above the toes. Once you know what your size is then you could order them online. Just remember that each brand of shoes fits different. So you may be one size in Capezio and a different size in Bloch's. Some people try them on at a dance shop to get to know what sizes fit them best and then order them online because sometimes you can get a better deal on them.
Here is a couple of links that will show you the different kinds of shoes available:

if you are more of a beginner i would get the leather shoe because they make your feet work harder. I prefer the canvas though because they are much more comfortable.
also get split toe shoes because it is much easier to point with and your point will look prettier.

cloth or leather with a bottom that is separated or connected in the balls of the feet and the heel.
(if you're a beginner you're not ready for pointe shoes yet! stay away from satin.)
