Well, it has been made officially known that his playing contract is actually 5 years for like $26 million...Its his endorsement deals that are expected to make him earn close to $250 million for the length of the contract...
...and this would not be the richest total deal in US sports history...Shaquille O'Neal and Peyton Manning are already in that range when you take salary and endorsement deals together...Dice K of the Red Sox hasn't even thrown a pitch and he already is the highest paid player in MLB...

Beckham is supposed to attract more attention to soccer in the US and a lot of his money will come from endorements , etc. Also, there are still a lot of Americans that do play soccer and enjoy it, me being one of them.

he's not. his soccer contract is NOT, i repeat not for $250 million dollars, that is the amount he could POTENTAILLY make in endorsements. like terry c said, his contract is only for about $5 million per year, and there are dozens and dozens of american athletes who make far more than that. that $250 million dollar figure is nothing more than a pipe dream. very few american athletes reach the kind of popularity it takes to earn that kind of endorsement money. tiger woods, shaqeal oneal, dale earnhardt jr., peyton manning, tom brady, derek jeter. will a soccer player ever reach the endorsement potential of these guys in this country? very doubtful

Soccer must be gaining popularity in the US. This is like "Why does NASHVILLE have the best team in the NHL when the people of Nashville don't even know what hockey is?"

And it's been tried before - with the great Pélé - and didn't work either. So either those rich entrepreneurs know something we don't (and that's why they're rich) or they don't know what to do with their money.
