1) The result is y = ax + b; where a = 7 and b = 3

2) Solve for a. Since this line is parallel to y = 7x + (1/6); a must be 7. Two straight lines are parallel only if their slopes are equal. Remember that the slope of y(x), @x, is dy/dx (7 in this case).

3) Solve for b: Since the resulting line must pass through (0,3), it follows that b = y - ax = 3 - a * (0) = 3

You can solve using the point-slope form for linear equations...but you need a slope value first. Since the line is to be parallel to the one you wrote, lets write that one in slope-intercept form:

6y - 42x = 1
6y = 42x + 1
y = 7x + 1/6

The slope of the equation is 7. Now, you have points for the parallel line, so you can fully solve now.

y - 3 = 7(x - 0)
y = 7x + 3 <------ Answer

You can easily see, as well, that as it has the same slope (but different y intercept), it is parallel.

The equation is y = 7x +3

For the lines to be parallel they must have the same slope

The slope of the given line is 7 and so the second line has the equation

y - 3 = 7 (x -0) ==> y = 7x +3

the slope of any parallel line is the same as the original equation, so if you put it into y=mx+b form, you have y=7x+1/6, so the slope is 7.

now you should remember this equation: y-y1=m(x-x1)...the "1"s are supposed to be in subscript though. you just have to substitute values for y1 and x1 (you don't have to worry about y and x)

the given point is (0,3) and the slope is 7. sooooo... if you substitute them into the equation:
y-3=7(x-0)
you get that

solve it:
y-3=7x
y=7x+3...and there ya go!
