WASHINGTON (AFP) - "The gulf between rich and poor in the United States is yawning wider than ever, and the number of extremely impoverished is at a three-decade high, a report out Saturday found.
Based on the latest available US census data from 2005, the McClatchy Newspapers analysis found that almost 16 million Americans live in "deep or severe poverty" defined as a family of four with two children earning less than 9,903 dollars -- one half the federal poverty line figure.
For individuals the "deep poverty" threshold was an income under 5,080 dollars a year.
"The McClatchy analysis found that the number of severely poor Americans grew by 26 percent from 2000 to 2005," the US newspaper chain reported.
"That's 56 percent faster than the overall poverty population grew in the same period," it noted.

No doubt, the Republicans want this to continue as well. I say there will be change or rioting coming real soon. The larger cities can't even overcome this Bush Administration like they did with the Reagan/Bush Administrations before them. Budget cuts and misappropriations have caught up with this President.

Even if you worked at full-time at a fast food resturant for $6 an hour you could make more in one year than $9,903. It's all about a culture, that we in America have created, where people are lazy and feel like someone should take care of them.

When people who live in poverty continue to have childeren they can't afford then they perpetuate the cycle. I can't afford kids right now so I take steps to prevent it. It's that simple. If these people would stop having kids and get a job they could pull them selves out of the hole. I work hard for my money and there's no way I should have to give it away to someone who won't do half the work I do.

Shows that welfare is a trap that cannot be escaped. Do you think that if you took more money from the rich that those living in poverty would be any better off than they are now? The welfare and support system in this country needs to be changed if you want to help these people. Just handing them money makes them slaves to the system since its never enough to be able to help themselves out of their hole.

Edit - Earl please show your proof of budget cuts to any entitlement program. There has never been a cut to any entitlement, ever. Sometime the rate of growth has been cut, but they have always grown faster than the rate of inflation. Remember these are Liberal programs we are talking about.

Thanks for the facts. Could this have anything to do with immigration? The illegals are probably the poorest in America. Were they counted in this analysis?
