Multiply the first equation by 4
4x = 5y + 16

Write the second equation this way:
4x = 17 + 5y
4x = 5y + 17

Now you can see that 4x is equal to two different values.
That is impossible, so ...
... something is wrong with the problem.

Is the first equation x = (5/4) y + 4, or is it
x = [ 5 / (4y) ] + 4 ?

x=5/4y+4
4x - 5y =17

x - 4 = 5/4y
(x - 4) x 4 = 5y
4x - 16 = 5y
4x - 5y = 20

No, because 20 =/= 17

you have two equations,

4x-5y=16 (this is the first multiplied by four and rearranged)
4x-5y=17

This can't be solved. Since subtracting one equation from the other gives something like 0=1 or 0=-1, which is impossible.
