Its way past time for that. But unfortunately the warlords and dictators that run most of the nations in Africa will never let that happen.

No. Africans are even more divided than Americans and kill each other just for being from a different tribe.
An "African Union" would be a good idea to some extent, but the African countries mainly grow and export the same things to third countries, so it would not help a lot. A few countries have "branded" art and artifacts, so that they sell in the developed world and would not benefit from a union.
It's time for African countries to start talking about such a union, though, and working together to improve trans-African transportation. They need either an international railway or an international highway system or both.

God I hope so. An African Union would benefit the world and the continent of Africa as well.
The problem is in many areas it is still tribal in structure, both politically and socially. That must be overcome for an African Confederation to work well. Otherwise, it will be replacing one tyranny with another.

Oh, yes, that's brilliant. Who shall be president, Charles Taylor? Robert Mugabe? Omar al-Bashir? Who shall be in opposition and how shall they be massacred? I definitely think that the African political process needs to be writ large across the whole continent. That's just brilliant.
Honestly, why would this be a good idea? I can't think of one reason.

Sure.. if you want to band together a lot of really poor countries so there is just one set of people to blame instead of the governments of each
