b*sin(b)=5
b= ???
i need to solve for b,but always on both sides of my equation !

hey, very interesting problem...

Can't solve this by hand, so I've tried some software....
Mathematica gives no logical solution.
MATLAB also is unable to find a closed form solution.

I'm in Mechanical Eng, not Math, but my guess is there is no direction solution of the form x=a.

We know that for 5=x*Sin(x) will give infinitely many solutions for x. Best way to find them is to graph y=x*Sin(x) and just look for solutions for any interval. That or go talk to a university math prof., they love puzzles like that.

The answer is 720.3981. I graphed it, and found out. I think there is a way of doing it by setting Sin-1(b/5)=b But I am not sure.

i would do this graphically or numerically.

you want sin(b) = 5/b so graph them against each other and see the b where they cross.

refine by calculating sin(b) and 5/b at your approximate answer and making your estimate more accurate.
