Our whole line has been backed up. When we do laundry water backs up into the tubs and leaks under the house. We have plumbers/septic dudes here now, but they asked me to turn the water on and i am not sure if i am right, which way is on and which way is off? (the water under the toilets)

they are on the roof and they can't hear me with the router(sp?) going...so i cant ask them

"Lefty loosey, righty tighty" for a gate or globe valve.
(CCW to open, CW to close).

A ball valve will have the handle parallel to the pipe for open and perpendicular for closed.

Turn the valve to the right, clockwise to turn off the supply. After off, you can check it by flushing it and no water will refill the tank.
