I watched it and had a mixed feeling afterward. How about you? In your opinion, what point are the makers of the movie trying to make?

It is a great movie. It over dramatizes a dysfunctional family but it also shows that being dysfunctional is not that unormal. IT IS NOT SET IN THE 70'S! The bug is very seventies but it is in present life. The point of the movie is just because a family is dysfunctional doesn't mean there's no love there. You can definetly see everyone's love for each other. Also, you can see that the everyone in the family is depressed and mad at life but that they are working toward a common goal which is getting the little girl to reach her dreams and being a little less dysfunctional.... It is a great movie. Some people just don't get it because it is kind of dark humor. If you liked this movie... watch the Royal Tenenbaums (it's amazing).

The movie is suppose to address as a dramedy, which is a balance of seriousness and comedic humor. Each character had a personal climax for example, Dwayne's climax was where he realizes he cannot see color, making him ineligible for the Air Force. Richard's climax is where Grandpa dies because that is where his opinions turn the other way around about his own dad. Even though the movie is tragic, the reason it is a comedy is because the family improves mentally than the beginning; not only because they think of funny ways out. The point of this movie is to show a mere irony of a dysfunctional family and teamwork. Just because it is a comedy, does not exactly mean it is going to be exaggeratedly hilarious. The movie demonstrates people will overcome each other; that is in our to serve other people in struggles. Putting a "Simpsons-esque" characterization on a family shows more realistic approach in the irony of what teamwork should really be. Overall, this movie is just about teamwork and sacrifices that people in nature take. Yes, I also had mixed feeling. I was sad that Richard always puts down Olive for no apparent reason. I love Alan Arkin as Grandpa Edwin Hoover. He is so funny, and he did some great movies in the 1960s, and I knew he would play a sarcastic character. I think that it will definitely get Best Screenwrite because this was created in a connected, fluid flow.

It depends on how you interpret the movie. Is it about the ridiculousness of child beauty pagents. How the children are exploited and made to look sexy and way older than their true ages. The emphasis should be on the word child. I don't know where these pagents get there idea that little girls should wear a tone of makeup, fake hair, sexy outfits and it be considered beauty. A natural child should be just that not a knock off version off an adult. Then there's the relationship of the family. The grandpa who seems to critical of his son. The son who is critical of his children. The son who learns the true value of family. The uncle who learns his life is worth living and how much he helps the family realize there worth. I actually liked this movie. It ended abruptly, but perhaps more would have been to much.

I think they are just trying to create humor and kind of show the irony of life. They show a sort of dysfunctional family and all their issues trying to relate the movie more to real people but at the same time over-dramatizing a lot of the "dysfunctionalness" which is what makes it so funny. I thought it was a great movie and very funny.

I think it is Carell's best work so far. It is kinda slow but it has some really funny or touching moments. I don't know what point they were trying to make, maybe you might as well like your family because its the one you have or the point could be to show how f'd up the beauty pageant world really is.

It was a very honest portrayal of a modern family (it was NOT set in the 70's) and how messed up the family dynamic can be, but how people can pull together when they need to protect one another. I watched it with my husband, our kids, and my mom, and we all enjoyed it.

I agree with you. The film was pointless. If this is one of the best five of the year, the industry is in trouble.
