I've been playing guitar about 15 years or so, since high school. I have an epi acoustic that sux, it never sounded good and won't stay in tune. I had it worked on once but it's not worth the $ to try fixing it again. I really want to go out and get a good Martin flat top guitar, or old used Gibson, but I don't play out so is it worth it? I really just play around the house when the mood strikes me, and actually I'm usually too intimidated to even play in guitar stores if there's too many other people around. So should I go for it for my own enjoyment or is it not worth spending $1000-2000?

It's all in how you look at it. I have a PRS Custom 24 that I bought when I was playing around a lot. I will never get rid of that guitar. I love it. Even if I never play in a band again I will always bust it out and jam a little by myself or with a friend.
I would say that if you enjoy playing guitar then it's totally worth it. $1500 dollars and it's going to last you the rest of your life not to mention the quality that it would be compared to what you're used to.
But if I were you and going to go ahead and get the guitar I would deffinately play it before I bought it. Just play a couple of your favorite parts of songs or riffs you've written while you're there on two or three different guitars and be done with it.

Long story short. If you plan on playing guitar for the rest of your life (even if it's half naked in your bedroom) I would surely throw a little money down, get a decent guitar and enjoy it for the next 30 years.

I would guess that $1000 isn't worth it if you are not a professional. But if you have a great deal of disposable income, go for it.
