Look who's talking, the grammar used in constructing your question is incorrect, so you must be one of those factors your looking for.

To everyone who bags on teachers:
What is taught in classrooms is decided by the Board of Education, NOT the teachers themselves. Sometimes teachers are allowed to decide how they are going to teach their curriculum, but nowadays there is a major push for conformity between classrooms - all teachers must have the same stuff on their walls, read all the same books and be on the same chapters as other teachers, etc etc. It leaves very little room for creativity.
To answer your question, kids are getting dumber because their school curriculum consists of preparing them for standardized test after test after test. Their grades are higher than previous generations, but they know less than their parents did. If the school board and our wonderful president would actually let teachers teach history or math instead of teaching kids how to take tests (which is really all they're learning) then maybe our children would be a little more intelligent. I thank the powers that be every day that I graduated high school when I did.
There should also be as much emphasis placed upon parental accountability as there is for teachers' accountability. Too often have I observed classrooms where the students were rude to their teachers and other students. I want to slap their parents for not teaching them any manners. Step up and limit the amount of time they spend on TV and video games, monitor what they're watching, don't allow them to have a computer in their rooms, and for the love of God stop signing them up for so many damn activities. Kids need time to just be kids! < /rant >

It's a by-product of the no child left behind program. In order to achieve that result you can't let any child get ahead. Adding to that fact is the lack of respect the teachers get, the schools don't back the teachers up. Most teachers grow weary of fighting the system AND the parents when trying to enforce any discipline. They end up just going thru the motions.

You are 180 degrees wrong, my friend.
The kids and teens of today are the smartest generation ever - they are all computer experts and the average kid in the mall has in their hands technology far superior to the most advanced mainfraim computers of 50 years ago.
What makes you think the're "dumb"?
Maybe you're just intimidated by their intelligence!

I think kids are dumber because they are not required to use their imagination in play. In this day and age, they have video games, which just requires them to win. Their brains don't have to think. Back in my day, we did not have video games, everything we did we had to make up. Barbies were dolls, not something on a computer game. We had to make up what we played. There is none of that these days, just kids sitting in front of a computer or a tv. Where is the imagination in that?

I don't think that's true. I often think/thought the same thing, that my generation was completely stupid, and that no one knew anything of use. But I'll be going about my normal day, and I often see things, someone says something, or does something, and I'm completely suprised, because it was sophisticated or smart. I think they just act stupid, because that's 'cool' and they act like they don't care, because that's cool, when in fact, there are very few who are dumb, and even fewer who don't care.

Uncontroled access to TV and video/pc games, and parents who work long hours and can't spend as much time with their kids reading to them and educating them as parents from past generations did.

Kids are not dummies, they are very smart. They are not taught the basics anymore so they miss out on understanding themselves. In other words lack of common sense.

It could be that they are just getting downright lazier going around with those headphones and listening to music on a constant basis could have an adverse effect on brain function.

Educational system on the overall is breaking down, as well as the schools not demanding enough from each and every student.

1. Government----want let parents raise there children without interfering,as well as not giving enough money and support to education.
2.Parents----afraid to make kids do the right thing..fear of being thrown in jail for making kids mind,do homework, study etc...
3.Schools----for hiring less than GREAT teachers, and making do with less than poor, who don't want anything but a check.
4.Teachers-----because we have so many who just don't care..
