All of them take a problem and try to solve it. More often they land up in new problems. That is how there is always lot of work for all these people. Research is two types. Embirical and basic. Embirical is collecting evidance/statistics to prove a hypothesis or find out some truth and so on. Marketing research is good example for this. Basic research could be pure theoretical or experimental. Example for theoretical research is Einstein's relativity formula. Most of the research carried out from a space station is experimental.

This people can handle much better teoretical things than practical ones, and they do some brainstorming to create something. Generally speaking, they work some years for a result, and they fell very good when others apreciate thei work.

mostly research, they give lecture, write books, they try to solve very complex problem, and they stay in front of a desk for a long time. It all depends.
