Put simply, you try to make the best possible 5-card hand out of the 2 cards in you hand and the 5 cards on the table. It's kind of hard to explain on here, but try these websites to help you out. Its how my brother learned to play. Wikipedia has examples of hands which makes it easy to visualize. I'm not sure if the websites say which hands are better than others, so heres the list lowest to highest:
High Card
One Pair
Two Pairs
3 of a kind
Straight (5 consecutive careds)
Flush (5 cards of same suit)
Full House (3 of a kind and a pair)
Four of a kind
Straight Flush (5 consecutive cards of same suit)
Don't know if you knew some terms, so I put simple definitions, just in case.

The object in the game is to win the most money. FYI, the best hand is AA(or ace-ace). If you have this hand, you're in excellent shape. The best tip I can give to beginners is don't "slowroll" too much - i.e., bet when you have a hand like AA, AK, KK, AQ, QQ, JJ. Don't overplay after the flop, either - that's when the first three cards come down. If you have AK and the flop comes 77Q, maybe toss out another little bet to start it, but if your opponent plays back at you, fold.

the object is to win and not lose too much money in the process. Remember the best hand doesnt always win theres a lot of bluffing involved and lots of intricacies to be learned along the way

I play in the nude since I wind up naked when playing poker anyway. Surprisingly I wind up nude even when we don't play strip poker.
