Righty tighty, Lefty loosy Right tightens or shuts off in this case Left loosen or turns on, flush the toilet take the tank lid off and turn the knob or shut off to the left until you see the water running into the tank then you will know it is on.

In the UK if its an isolation valve the line which you put your screwdriver in runs in line with the pipe, usually a quarter turn, if you turn it fully one way its off, then fully the other its also off, so stop it in the middle.
