Key about the Detroit...the treasures are(for the most part) hidden. You will not walk down the street and see everything you need in downtown detroit. You will see all types of bars and restaurants and events...but not the shopping scene you see in most cities. If you are into the "ethnic" scene (i'm black)...you really have to know the right people. The best events are not publicized on the radio...NEVER. Otherwise, I would only "live" in about 3 or 4 areas of detroit. Depends on what you are moving here for. School, work, family...that all makes the difference.

Here is the only question you should axe yourself…..why would anyone move TO Detroit????? Atlanta is no great shakes, but it sure beats the hell out of Detroit.
It is the biggest dump in the entire country. There are no jobs, the city is a dump, the suburbs are a joke, people are moving OUT of Michigan in droves. There is nothing good at all about Detroit in any fashion. It is the vortex of stupidity. The only people still living there are either too stupid to leave, too poor to leave, or are foolish enough to think the automotive industry will continue despite billions in losses each year.
This is coming from someone who lived there for about 15 years, in the “nicest” suburbs Detroit has to offer (read as I lived in a million dollar home and still hated it.) Get ready for overpriced homes for what you get, appreciation that can’t even keep up with inflation (read as you will LOSE money on your home – the ONLY place in the country where people lose money on homes), and excessive property taxes.
I moved to the west coast 4 years ago and my home has doubled in value. My suburban Detroit home has increased 6% in those same 4 years. That is only 25% of what natural inflation should have taken the value to, and the topper is the property taxes have increased 50% over the same period of time. What a bargain huh?
Take my sage advice, do what ever you have to do to STAY in Atlanta. Detroit is a dump, will always be a dump, and will end up as a large scale Gary, Indiana within the next 5 years (read as rampant poverty, no wealth whatsoever, and only the savagely depressed underclass still living there), sounds like fun huh?

I lived in Detroit for 22 years before I moved to the suburbs... If you have a choice, move to a close suburb. There are very few nice areas to live in Detroit. I personally do not feel safe there anymore unless I am downtown seeing a show or something. It's just not like it used to be...it's a SHAME!!! I saw the neighborhood I grew up in turn from something nice like you would see in a movie...to a trashed up, crime-filled, nasty heap of an area... Oh well... The city was also much better when Archer was in office. Kwame sucks.

My boyfriend has family that lives in lil burns, Ga and we go down every year at least twice to visit and every time we wish we could stay, his family and him are orginally from Detroit and he wants to move back down there when we graduate from college. I have lived in Detroit all my life, my first year of college I lived in Chicago for a year, and I just recently moved to Flat Rock, MI but I still think Atlanta, then Chicago is better than Detroit, MI, I would move but I would be too home sick from my family! Everything about the D is not bad though so don't be discouraged, but you can experience all four seasons in one day!

First of all Detroit is NOT "junky & all ghetto-y" like ONE USER stated. You have to see for yourself. I cant sit here & say that Detroit is crime free. NO city is! BUT Detroit does have a high crime rate but Detroits crimes seem to make natonal news more often than anyone else. The media & people who have closed minds tend to make Detroit out to be a total sh!thole when its not. There ARE some rough places that even I dont go in (Detroit native!) but there are some areas of Detroit that are nice.

I am a native Detroiter who now lives in one of its suburbs (I moved out when I was 30). I'm not going to lie....if you're coming from someplace beautiful like Atlanta, be ready for a little shock.

the farther you get from Detroit, the more you realize just how rough it really is... and yes.. employment is difficult.. economy is terrible.
moving TO detroit is sort of like driving backwards down a one-way road.

Why in the world would you want to move here from the ATL????
Are you on some kind of new drugs?
There are no jobs here, I mean NONE.
In September I am leaving the state for good because the umemployment rate is going to skyrocket beyond what it already is.
Crime is ridiculous.
Please dont' come up here unless you want to be unemployed, homeless and broke
