Mithra makes some good points, but I'd go further. Beyond a certain critical point--which I'm pretty sure no human has yet attained--superhuman intelligence can become a self-perpetuating force, growing almost without limit. The human brain, of course, can only become so intelligent, but the superhuman intelligence would quickly figure out ways to bypass those biological limits through technological means, perhaps beginning with uploading one's mind into a quantum computer that would allow thought millions of times faster, on-the-fly neural re-wiring, addition of new neural nodes as needed, and near-limitless memory. From there, a human mind could bootstrap itself into a posthuman superintelligence, and perhaps from there into a near-godlike entity called an Archailect. (See links below.)

As one with superhuman intelligence, I would seek to spread intelligence and rationality to others--why be lonely at the top? What I _wouldn't_ do is become some sort of dictator who thinks he knows what's best for everyone. History is littered with the remains of those who bravely fought to mold the world into their own image, only to fall into violence or corruption.

With the spread of superhuman intelligence--posthumanism--it is my hope that we can finally abandon our strife-ridden reliance on politics and religion. Lust for power over others would be seen as the primitive and needless emotion that it is.

We would also be able to conquer death through evolution into post-biological "solid-state" entities no longer stuck in fragile, mortal meat-bodies.

Development of advanced nanofabrication techniques would allow us to satisfy all our material wants (those we still had), and to eliminate hunger among the "normals".

And we would finally be able to leave this rock, spreading out among the stars as fast as our antimatter drives can take us.

I've been thinking a lot about these possibilities, and so have a number of others. There's even a semi-fiction website, Orion's Arm, that explores what a superintelligence society might be like. In contrast to all the pessimists in the world today, I think our future looks quite bright. For all our advanced technology & science now, mankind is still in its infancy. I only hope I can live long enough to see it mature, and maybe, long enough to live forever!

I'd like to think that if that be the case I'd have some ability to understand the best solutions to ease the strife of the planet in all realms. Then the plan would be to show others how this could be done, provide education to the masses, open minds to new possibilities and help to create a more peaceful, friendly, compassionate environment. Maybe hunger could be eliminated and everyone could have an opportunity to use their intelligence to lift the planet higher.

If there have been this variety of hero, then why even hassle having heroes? Heroes are meant to inspire wish, braveness, and faith. Intelligence grows from journey, journey comes from annoying circumstances, without annoying circumstances there's no danger of workout theory...
