We as americans are generally used to buying from a grocery store. However in many parts of rural US, Canada and Mexico, just to name a few, there are still a lot of road side and "open air" markets.

I remember in Italy, Greece, Korea etc, there are many selling by the road side.

People tend to like the "fresh from the orchard" idea...me included...guilty.

Hope this helps.

The classification of the tomato can be confusing. But there are key things to note. It can actually be considered a vegetable and a fruit at the same time depending on which context it's in. Scientifically, it is considered a fruit because it is actually the ovary enclosed with seeds that came from a developing flower. However, due to its culinary usage, since it does not have the conventional "sweet" taste of most other fruits, it is usually classified as a vegetable. It is most often served with other vegetables rather than with fruits or sweet desserts. However, some prefer applying the scientific definition while cooking, despite it not being prepared as a fruit. Additionally, the US Supreme Court declared the tomato as a vegetable purely on the fact that it is used most often as a vegetable when it comes to paying a tax under a tariff act. Hence, some "vegetables" such as cucumbers and squashes are also fruits according to scientific definition.

In ancient times, most of the products were sold on the roadside near the Temple . Even today , in most rural areas the products are sold on the roadsides
There are most modern and beautiful showrooms selling vegetables in big cities.
In some cities not only vegetables and fruits but shoes are also sold on the roadside. (eg. shoes and kitchenware and clothes are sold on the roadside in Bandra ,Mumbai)
What's wrong in selling on the roadside if the seller has a permit from the competent authority?

Entrepreneurs should have the right and choice to sell where ever possible.

The probable reason are:
1) What what seen repeatedly is bought frequently. Also it is easier to buy, as parking on roadsides is much more easier than getting a parking in a shopping-moll, in India! Many of the molls have pay & park!
2) There are places in a/c markets selling F&V, but prices are exhorbitant. The road-side shops have lower over-heads, and are run by poor people who keep low margins compared tro those Stores.
3) The F&V on road-side shops are mostly find to be Fresh. Also they allow you to Taste it Before you BUY.
4) Most stores sell IMPORTED(!) fruits, which hardy have any flavor or taste,Imported fruits are generally processed to preserve longer. While locally grown F&V have good taste and are Fresh.
5) there can be many more reasons (bargain! etc..), which Indian Housewives KNOW BETTER! Because they are expert into that.

Because if they start selling eatables in an air conditioned showroom, everyone won't be able to afford it. Don't you understand, there's alot of difference in the rates of tea in a tea stall and in a five star hotel.

Secondly people who sell vegetables and fruits donot make much profit. They cannot afford showrooms, can they?

:-)

I heard that selling them in the middle of the road didn't work out too well.

Seriously, it's a convenience to drivers and the sellers can't afford to rent shops, so they compete with price and quick service. Also, you usually want to try on a pair of shoes so the quickness of curb service is lost.

Its sold not in India alone. may be because the customers are many in places selling roadway fruits. Another point I see is that may be its fresh or brought from the local cultivators they are sure that they get an easy market.

We have hypermarkets here that sells everything under one roof in coolers compartments. But honestly I prefer to drive down to the farmers market on weekends and check out the fresh produce and buy it straight from the farmers. Give me more satisfaction if you were to ask me. I made friends with the farmers too.

So I really don't know how to convince you on the term of fairness.

That is the difference between the product of the soil and the product of the factory.
