if you can play melody on the guitar, you should be able to pick it up on the violin fairly easy. I you can get a book, it would be even easier.Violin is not actually hard, people just think it is. Do you know notes on the organ? Then it would not be hard to learn notes on the violin. You have only 4 strings: GDAE.
On guitar you have EADGBE. If you can play melody on the e-string of the guitar, you should be able to play on the e-string of the violin. If you can play melodies on the d-str. of the guitar, likewise you could do it on the violin.,etc.

There are lots of violin instruction books on eBay.com. Here is a link to them.

You should definitely go with the violin. It's much more beautiful, and since you're leaning towards that you learn it! Here's a website that will really help you out.

Good luck!
Edit: I see somebody claims that the violin is too hard to learn. Well guess what: My 13-year-old brother is teaching himself. It's only been a few months, and he's starting to sound very good. Yes, it'll take time, and there will be days you want to give up, but if you stick with it, you won't regret it.

Guitar is infinitely sexier. Plus you can accompany yourself with a guitar...sing and play at the same...and have it sound good. Violin is a second class sting instrument.

guitar is a much more diverse instrument than the violin. but if you want to learn violin, then go ahead. i would not suggest teaching yourself violin, it is a very difficult instrument that needs instruction from a professional.
