Go in to any bookshop and pick up Lonely Planet's book to Malaysia. They detail different standards of accommodation, what to do etc etc. Check out their website too and go to the Thorn Tree section - select the Malaysia branch...you'll probably find that others who are either there or just returned will have posted questions / answers.

It's almost 20 years since I was there so it has probably changed a lot, but I do recall that the side with the really long beach had a lot of sand flies. However, there were nice places to stay on the opposite side (and a pleasant walk over the hill / through woods to get between the two).

suggest that you go to Tioman during off peak season [ not during public/school holiday or weekend ], where you don't have to books in advance regarding hotel/resort/chalet, its even cheaper then.

There are all types of accommodation available in Tioman, from Salang[ northen part of Tioman ] to Kg Air Batang, Tekek [ where the air-strip is located if you fly there ], Kg Genting, Kg Nipah n Kg Mukut [ the sourthen part ] then Kg juara [ the other side of the island facing the South China Sea ].

You may like to chose the full board package offered by those resorts, full board meaning you just have to get to Mersing n every thing would be taken care of - ferry transfer, 5 meals, accommodation etc etc.

activities there are mostly water related such as snokerling, diving, swimming, fishing or jungle trekking. You too can rent a bycicle or bike to explore the island. Shopping? sorry its quite limited although you may find something at Tekek. if you are tired of hotel/resort's food, you may try the food court at Tekek just beside the jetty, they served some very fresh seafood !!

pls try [ www.island.com.my ] to find out more about your dreamed holiday ! Cheer !

if you going with family, the best place is berjaya resort, try to ask for the apt room not the hotel its much more saving then hotel. If money concern you.
I did b4 join berjaya vacation club, rent a chalet around the island, the price that you pay kinda ridiculous and less amenity. Unless if you come in group or some friends i think you don't mind staying at the chalet by kampung ppl.
Places to go where else but sea, just prepare for yr swimming suit and extra cash for boating, snorkeling and scuba.
For me tioman is a paradise if only we love snorkeling or scuba. Other than that there's nothing. A very quite place for a nice and peaceful holiday. I love it.

Pulau Tioman is a small island, the largest of a group of 64 island and islets off the eastern coast of Johor.

There are at least 14 hotels and chalets on the island (only the first 2 are 5-star resorts):
Berjaya Tioman Beach, Golf & Spa Resort, JapaMala Resort,
Genting Bayu Chalet, Genting Damai Resort Tioman, Minang Cove Resort, Mukut Harmony Resort, Paya Beach Resort, Panuba Inn Resort, Salang Beach Resort, Salang Indah Resort, Salang Pusaka, Sun Beach Resort, Tioman Beauty Resort, Tioman Paya Resort.

Things you can do in Tioman are mostly water-related: snokelling, scuba-diving, fishing. You can also go trekking, rock-climbing, bicyling. Or just lay on the beach, enjoy the sunrise. Don't stress yourself, just take it easy and relax... that's why you are on a holiday!

Enjoy your visit!

get the isolated beach panuba island. Accomodation is cheap, beach isnt too noise with kids. Go snorkel, diving, jungle trekking, and they have a pretty jetty in panuba. salang is more of commercialized area with pretty corals here. if u enjoy noisy nightlife choose berjaya resort. u can always hire a boat to other islands, so no big deal on where u are gona stay
