Spiders do a great job but have not reached the moon (ahead of humans) yet. Many creatures can spin a thread such as silk worms and cocoon builders. The web design is part of the spider's instinct and none have attended M.I.T. except in dark corners. The amazing thing to me is that the spider thread is dotted with tiny globs of oil that help snare insects and catch lots of dust when abandoned and are actually more difficult to remove from a wall than silk threads. You can see the dots when they have collected dew.

It's just something that has developed over thousands of years and then been passed on as an instinct. It would have started as something fairly simple, such as using their silk to wrap up their prey, and then over time got more and more elaborate. It is similar to the way that birds have gradually got better at building nests, or how bees build hives.
Though I agree that they are very impressive, (a wet web holds over 400,000 times it's own weight!) I don't think that spiders' webs put our own achievements to shame, spiders are a bit of a one trick pony.
Or they done a course in web design. Sorry...

Hi. I also find it amazing that a spider can built a web by its self without training. The only explanation that makes any sense to me is that the gland at the back of some ancient spider evolved and this 'drag line' has a survival factor. Instinct has alway been a mystery to me. Or maybe "Meadsy" is right!

Not a maths question. Spiders learnt to build webs from generation to generation. Its an evolution question. Spiders build webs because its their instinct to survive.

I think spiders have a geometic shape in their heads. Wonderful how they make webs.

spiders didn't learn how to build webs they evolved to have the capability to do so, just as birds evolved to have the ability to fly.
