Britain led the world when the Industrial revolution was triggered by a chap called Abraham Derby.
He was first to smelt iron efficiently, by using coke instead of charcoal. His location at Coalbrookdale was ideal as they had deposits of Coal, iron Ore and Limestone nearby. All he needed in his revolutionary process.

Basically, a shift from manual labor and predominantly agriculturally based societies to societies more focused on industry and manufacturing. In Europe, this occurred in the 18th century, but in other parts of the world, it occurred at different times, depending on their level of development.
