I have just installed a new chandelier. It has 8 x 60w bulbs but trips the 5 amp circuit it is on after about 5 mins. Is this overloading the circuit ? I have a spare 16amp slot on the RCB board.

8 x 60 =480watts, which is 2 amps at 240 volts. A 5a mcb will carry a slight overload, so you must have at least 3 amps or about 700 watts elsewhere on this circuit. You will have to re-balance the circuits if you have enough breakers and feeds to juggle around. Do NOT transfer to a 16a mcb, it's to high. If you are really stuck you could safely change the 6amp for a 10 amp, as the wiring will be at least 1.0² mm. OR change the 60 watt lamps to 40 watt?

Hi David
you got a fault but should not up to 16 amp as this too high, goto 10 amp max & if still fault then get an electrician to check out the wiring for you
I would try 40w lamps as this will still give plenty light

This is about 2 amps. 5 amp circuit should be ok. Perhaps the breaker is getting tired, change it.
DO NOT use the 16a breaker, the 5a breaker provides protection to the circuit wiring, a 16a short will melt the wiring.

a load check needs to be carried out using a clamp meter at the source of your lighting circuit .You could have overloaded 5a breaker, upgrade to 10a only if circuit is clear of any faults.any doubts consult a qualified electrician

If i remember correctly the lighting circuit has a 15 amp fuse hence this is why ur fuse keeps blowing, but please check b4 u upgrade to 15 amp as my memory is a bit weak due to strokes etc.
