rune essence is used to runecraft runes, and yes, you do have to complete a quest to begin runecrafting. use the link below to get to a good runecrafting guide. good luck!

If you have a Rune talisman you can go to an alter for the specific taliman and make the rune essence into that kind of rune. but you have to complete a quest to do so (i forgot, i quit playing a while ago). but its really useful to have and try to get as much of it as possible, because you can sell it to people for free runes and money at alters for rare runes like law and nature.

when you have a talisman you right click it then click locate. The talisman tells you what direction to go. when u get to these weird rocks u use the talismn on the rocks and you get to the rune alter. if u have a goo run crafting level u can make ruins at that alter.

You can go to a rune alter with some in your inventory and turn them into runes.
