It wasn't that long ago I was a child, growing up my parents limited how much Tv we could watch in a week. The few shows we did watch they watched with us.While watching one thesese shows we'd talk about what was happening so if something happened on screen my parents felt was sending a wrong message they'd talk to us about it and explain what was wrong with the message. This didn't happen too often because they shows we watched were family safe. And if nothing appropriate could be found on tv during our TV time they weren't afraid to shut the TV off. As for junk food yes we had it but that was limited too. We couldn't eat candy and chips all day every day, and just because a product was marketed on TV didn't mean Mom & Dad were going to buy it for us.
We also had to go outside and play meet the neighbor kids, get exercise. If the weather was horrile we played inside. We also read. Some after noons were required to read. Others we read on of our own wills. Our parents also read to us. We also went on trips to museums and farms and zoos and aquariums and the library , had music lessons etc. Paren't can't expect society to parent for them. There are creative alternatives to TV and junk food parents just have to take the time to think of them/

Start at the local level with your own children. We record everything and watch it later. So far, our daughter only watches programs from Comcast OnDemand which only shows commercials before and after the show. We mute and/or fast-forward through the commercials.
When she starts watching more stuff with actual commercial breaks interspersed within the show, we'll teach her that commercials are evil interruptions that should be fast-forwarded through to get back to her show.
It all starts at home.
As for the unhealthy foods, we try to limit her (and our) access to them and have enough decent alternatives on hand that one doesn't feel cheated by the lack of such bad foods.

Fill their time with something better to do, get them good books to read, or new games to play.
Set limits on everything, there is a time for T.V, time to study, time to play....etc
Junk food should be only eaten like once a week or once in a couple of weeks.
Play with them, make them busy with something else.

Don't own a T.V. ( or computer ) and don't buy anything but healthy snacks..Apples,carrots. etc......Read to your children, help them develop an imagination so the will go outside and PLAY....Life is better without some things....People get closer if they don't have things messing with there minds all the time...

You know, I flunked 4th grade and had to retake it. People in my family don't flunk. As a result, the TV went into my parent's room, and I was 90% denied access to it for the whole of the next year.

Set limits. Like, what time they can watch TV, and days when they can drink soda and crap like that.
