An external hard disk will not speed up your computer. Try to upgrade your memory to 1GB/512GB. If you got the budget, upgrade the processor.

External USB hard disk is good for you to store data in to it or use it as a backup.

Always keep your existing hard disk space 1 or 2 GB free.

Try un-install any unused application and clean up temp Internet folder

And defrag your hard disk. It will speed up a bit in term of performance.

Storing your photographs on a eternal source won't make your laptop swifter - to try this frees up area on your problematical force and gives you an all significant decrease back up in the experience that your laptop crashes. An exterior problematical force is a thank you to flow in view which you may get a lot greater on the exterior problematical force. I even have 2 grandsons (twins) so i know the type you experience.:)

CNet.com (or is it PCWorld.com?) has a tutorial on transferring your old hard drive to a bigger one via an EZ-Uprade kit. You use an enclosure to do it and can put you old one in it once you clone the drive.

***Edit: didn't read the question all the way through, sorry.
