I am an IAB book-keeping student and have been told that cheques are being phased out sadly. However, in the meantime I can state that the debit card is an electronic equivalent and:
1 - does not incur interest (the money needs to be in the account
2 - does not give automatic cover when stolen or the good /services are faulty (unlike credit cards where the first £50 is usually the maximum exposure for the holder)
Sorry, that is all the help I can give. Perhaps banks are trying to discourage on line use of cheques as the administration is expensive.

Debit cards are the best, use them like a credit card but come out of your account like a cheque. Also when used unlike a cheque your statement says what you purchased and from who

Yes there are. Places like Amazon, Waterstones and Play will all accept cheque payments if you don't have a debit or credit card.

You can purchase a VISA or MasterCard Debit Card Gift Card, which you can load with money from your checking account, and use the card up to the value you loaded. They are just as safe as regular debit cards (limited liability for fraudulent use).

I am in the same boat, I REFUSE to guse my cards o line or over the phone and intend to keep doing things that way. The way I deal on line is to email them and ask them for their address so I could send a Money order, most of the time they are happy to oblige.
