I have seen other people on my MSN contact list have them on their names but they appear as squares, does anyone have any ideas? Is there a special programme you need?

I know the MSN Symbols (L), but what i'm actually asking is I want it to appear on my name like the ones above, i don't want the MSN ones!

You have to type in the actual emoticon as you would on your keyboard whilst chatting.
E.g. if you want a heart, you have to type in (L) when choosing your screen name.
Tip: If you want to see a full list of emoticons, you can start a conversation, click the emoticon button, and hover over an emoticon to show what letters you need.
If you can't see the symbols (just the letters), you're probably using an early version of messenger, and you need to need to update.

no no special program.
To get the heart you put in your name (L)
For the music symbol you enter (8)

as squares???? like this? [] [] [] [] ? use the brackets located near the enter button. [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] []lol
or a heart <3 use the less than sign and the 3.

you press shift ..hold it then press the buttin that has it on it..
