I too have "read books on WWII, seen events, movies, etc." It does seem like there is a ton of information available everywhere, and that is fine by me. I began by reading books, and watching TV shows on WWII, then it was Vietnam, and then it branched out into Military History of different countries and different ages. There are many things that make up the fascination: conflict, the study of power, war on a global scale, technical innovations, strategy, enslavement, liberation, and human nature.

Because very few events before or since have affected the world as much as World War II did. World War II changed everything. 10s of millions of people were killed. The nuclear age and the jet age began. Colonialism fell apart after WWII.

Because being a world war in which the most powerful nations of the world aligned against one another, the lives of many millions were deeply affected by it and the world as we know it today was shaped by its outcome. For the most part (with the exception of the USSR) world war II pitted totalatarianism against democracy. Were it not for the heroism of young men and women who might now be considered just children, an entirely different world would have been forged, a far more intimidating and frightening one at that. With all the attention paid to them, we honor the courage and foresight that generation selflessly displayed in making us what we are today.

I think there's two reasons for that. What Mighty C said is the first reason all though to a lesser extent because genocide still occurs today and most people don't do anything. The second reason is very simple: The U.S. won. If we had lost, do you really think WWII would be mentioned as much? For example, take a look at Japanese history, WWI isn't mentioned that much because simply because Japan lost.

"The winner writes history."

I like your question :=)

For me, personally I prefer to read something that is non-fiction and concrete and thats was the primary reason that draws me to this dry subject. But as I continue to read more and sharing with fellow YA friends, I realise there are so much things to read about and I guess this is something I really want to read indepth in years to come.

But most of all I felt based on the fact that so many famous people and ordinary lives had been drawn into this war itself, has justify the reason why i should spend time reading and pondering what it has got to do with my present life.

To put it bluntly our present way of handling situations too can leave as a history of many generations to see.

Hope this help.

It’s important because it was a pivotal period affecting the entire world (not just the USA) in many, many ways. (1) In some cases, technology or the opening of Alaska, it was a catalyst for more rapid change than would have happened otherwise. (2) In other cases, the changes were not just accelerated but more fundamental in nature.

The list includes:
Political geography
Populations
Governmental institutions
Technology
Economics
Religion
The way we perceive and fight wars
Changes from an agrarian to industrial societies (USA in particular).
Women’s place in society
Alliances
Reporting and the press/radio/TV
Medicine

Because the war was so huge. It impacted society and so many people supported the soldiers and so many people died. There was also a boom in technology at the time, such as jet engines, new cars, new guns, and new planes. Another reason it is so talked about and so popular is because we (the allies) took on two wars simultaniously. One in the Atlantic which was Germany and one in the Pacific which was Japan. Hope I helped. =)

It shaped the world we see today. The magnitude of the war was tremendous (the Soviet Union lost 22 million people, not 50 million), and it was also the first major war that could easily be captured by technology (WWI predates both radio and television, and is barely predated by motion pictures).
