Try mild soap and water on a cloth rag before you resort to fine sandpaper. Sand with the wood grain followed by scottch bright or steel wool.

Try using an eraser or use a low grade steel wool. this should life the mark off without leaving an obvious mark if you used sandpaper.

Sand paper them away.Or wire wool.
