An organic compound is any member of a large class of chemical compounds whose molecules contain carbon and hydrogen.

organic compound is any of a large class of chemical compounds in which one or more atoms of carbon are covalently linked to atoms of other elements, most commonly hydrogen, oxygen, or nitrogen. The few carbon-containing compounds not classified as organic include carbides, carbonates, and cyanides.

Defination : Organic Compaunds are the compounds contains Carbon (C) as a basic element.Bond between carbon and other elements are Covalent Bods

CCl4 ( Carbon Tetra Chloride) is a organic compund because it contains Carbon as a bonding element. All Cls are bounded to the single carbon. But if you take example of CO2, i.e. not a Organic Compund because bond in C and O is not a covalent bond in CO2 it is Ionic Bond.
Carbon is Tertavalent and shows tendency to react with any avilable molecule. Most compunds in this world are of carbon including ourselfs. The are called Organic because they are in huge variety in all living beings.
There are many sites which can give a lot of information about Organic Compounds and also many books are avilable. Go ahead discover the Carbon !

An organic compound is any member of a large class of chemical compounds whose molecules contain carbon and hydrogen; therefore, carbides, carbonates, carbon oxides and elementary carbon are not organic. The study of organic compounds is termed organic chemistry, and since it is a vast collection of chemicals (over half of all known chemical compounds), systems have been devised to classify organic compounds.

The usually accepted definition is a compound with carbon-hydrogen bonds. Some would classify carbon tet as organic, as its nature is similar to other organic compounds, while others going by the strict definition would classify it as inorganic.

Not all carbon compounds are organic, as none of the carbonates or other carbon-oxygen compounds, cyanides, or carbides are considered to be organic. The classical definition of "carbon chemistry" is not applicable.

The term organic compound was coined by Wohler in the year 1828.At first it was considered that these compounds are derived from living beings.so the name. But now it is used to represent carbon containing compounds. If C and H are together it is termed as hydrocarbon.
