It is definitely not a one-time shot! There are two things that I like to do when I think that I have gotten to the point that I want to be - build more good links to me site and always, always look at the good things that my competitors are going. I have gotten some of my best ideas by looking at what other folks are doing to rank well on terms I am interested in. Once I see I good idea it is time to copy and try to do it a bit better.

You keep upto date with SEO - follow Danny Sullivan he is the #1 guru.

You keep doing what you have been doing but make changes to meet the demands of the search engines. e.g. a few years ago meta tags were important - now they are not and then links are important, now search engines are also looking at content.

I am not promoting any products. I have no connection with Danny Sullivan except I have been following him for 15+ years and he is the #1 expert in search engines. http://searchenginewatch.com/

Small Business Marketing Strategy: Target the up-and-coming search engines

While Google still rules the roost when it comes to Internet search engines, and Yahoo is firmly entrenched in second spot, a number of new start-ups are hoping to give them a run for their money. And a good small business marketing strategy would be to check them out and see how you can make them work for your site!

Some of the new up-and-comers include:

Powerset (www.powerset.com): A "natural language" search engine

Hakia (www.hakia.com): A "meaning-based" search engine

Wikia(www.wikia.com): A "community-based" search engine

ChaCha(www.chacha.com): A "social networking-based" search engine

Snap (www.snap.com): A search engine that offers visual previews

It's a smart small business marketing strategy to continue optimizing for the Google, Yahoo, and MSN search engines as they are by far and away the most popular -- but niche search engines could provide new opportunities to reach your market. Be sure to check them out!

Build more pages, get more links, and competitive analysis to the death.

Lather. Rinse and Repeat
