John Grisham is a crime/legal thriller writer who was formerly a lawyer. If you mean an author who is a criminal, I don't know. I vaguely recall that a female mystery author was revealed to have been tried for her mother's murder as a teenager, and a movie was made about it, but I don't know her name and a brief search didn't bring it up.

John Grisham does law crime if that is what you are looking for! James Patterson, Tom Clancy, and Johnathan Kellerman do crime thrillers too! Happy reading!!

Ann Rule is probably the most famous true crime author. She writes nonfiction about serial killers and other horrible crimes, but I don't think she herself is a criminal.
