My five month old woke up this morning with a bad cough and runny nose. Can I give her infant tylenol cold and cough, or is she too young? I can't remember when I started giving my other two medicines. I know everyone will say take her to the doctor, and I will tomorrow, but they're closed today and I don't want to go to the hospital and expose her to even more.

The dosage on the side of the bottle starts at 2 years (24 pounds). My child is five months (18 pounds). I know that I can give her .8ml of regular tylenol. I just wanted to be sure that I could give the cold and cough.

I just checked my daughter's baby book. She had her first cold at 3 months and I was giving her 1/4 of a full dose of cold medicine. My doctor--at the time--recommended 1/4 of a full dose when we gave her regular Tylenol instead. I know that the dosages went up together from that point on based upon my child's weight. So, if you're allowed to give your daughter 1/2 of a full dose of Tylenol, you should be able to give her 1/2 of a full dose of cold medicine.

However, if you're using a Tylenol cold product, make sure you don't give her any extra Tylenol.

At 5 months old, give it to her. It should say on the side of the bottle though. If the starting age is 6 months just give her a bit less. I havent had an infant in a long time but I know I gave them infant tylenol way before 5 months.

Tylenol Cold Dosage

My doc told me no cold medicine but that tylenol cold for infants was ok. We have been using it the past few nights because he is sick and has been running a low grade fever. It will not hurt her, just don't give it too much. It is in the baby section at the store. Also, there is baby rub vicks now and it works wonders. Try the baby vapor bath and the hot steam vaporizer. It is 10 bucks at walmart. For those who are judging her.. she is a new mom and even though the doc says something, sometimes the mother knows best. She may just be asking for others experiences and answers. Grow up.

Benalyn has some cold medicine drops for infants above 3 months. Go to your local pharmacist and ask them if they carry it. If not go to walmart! Saline drops should help his nose too. Try a humidifier with vicks as well. Good luck

I would be a little worried giving my baby medication that is not age appropriate.

You have to go by weight and the doctor will tell you if it's safe for the baby and how much to give. Never give a baby medicine that's not for them without talking to the doctor first. That's why the label doesn't say anything about under 2 years. If you don't want to go to the hospital then wait until tomorrow, it's better than overdosing your child.

I gave it to my daughter when she was about 4 months old and didn't have a problem. I'm not sure exactly how much I gave her, but just give your daughter half of the 2 year old dose.

consult your doctor
make sure you ask a doctor before you give medicine you don't know if you should be giving.
