That's a pretty daunting question. All of us here are just individuals, and as history has shown us, change really requires long-term mobilization of large numbers of people.
I'm teaching right now at a university, and I guess that's my small contribution to nation building--forming students who'll hopefully have a greater sense of responsibility for the nation. I don't think it matters what field we're in--whether business or education or government or economics or what have you--but if we change our paradigms about our work and it's significance in society, I think that's a good start. What do I mean by this?
A really good example would be an entrepreneur I know; he's structured his business (a profitable furniture export business) to make sure that it's socially responsible--that he provides good jobs (with more than adequate compensation and benefits) and sources materials responsibly (i.e. makes sure that the wood he uses isn't illegally logged, etc.). It's easy to get into business with just the bottom line in mind, but if we just changed the way we looked at business and see how we can be socially responsible within that particular field, I think it would make a great difference.

The Philippines needs some entrepreneurial spirit among its people. Its lacking in a bad way. If a foreigner comes there and tries to help the in-laws get started in business, they just take whatever they can get in cash, while they can get it and screw the business plan. Shortsighted greed prevails. It seems their attitude is "why work when my sister will send me money anyway" I say all the OFW should stop sending money home and save it for themselves. Even if you (OFW) think you are investing in something back home, your relathieves are having a good time at your expense. You wll be left with nothing in the end and they will all turn their back on you when you come home without pasalubong plenty.

I own a small business and pay my taxes dutifully and honestly. I employ a few people. I buy Filipino products as much as possible. My own little way. It's hard enough just to earn money for your family's needs. That's why not many Filipinos can't be bothered to worry about the country anymore.
