...but still bothersome. I know that I may become used to the odor and guests of my home would smell it greatly. So, my question is...what's the best way to find the source of the odor? I somewhat recall a slight odor when the home was empty...and the previous owners had a dog. It's not an animal urine smell...but it could be a covered up one :-). Thanks so much!

try using an enzyme based odor remover. add it to your shampooer and shampoo the carpet. The enzymes will actually eat the odor, not just mask it. You may actually find the product at a car detail shop as they deal with that pretty frequently.

Clean the carpets and wash down the walls and ceilings. Don't forget the closets. If the odor only seems to be in some rooms, try keeping the doors closed as much as possible. If the odor is coming from just one or 2 rooms, this will help stop the odor from spreading and may help you pinpoint the source.

Had this same problem when I bought my home. You will have to start with the carpets, shampoo them thru and thru.If wood floors or tile they have to be disinfected and or cleaned. Then wash or paint the walls, change any draperies in the room left by the owner. Chances are it is coming from the carpet or floor. Use lysol spray or febreeze in the air. I never located the source but all this did get rid of it. Good luck! Happy Housewarming!

Do you have carpets? I would start by getting rid of them and putting down hardwood or new carpeting. If that isn't in your budget try using oxyclean in the carpets, because it will dissolve things in the carpet pad underneath. You will have to do a little bit at a time and get good ventilation so you don't breed mold instead.

Then, I would wash the walls with a water/vinegar mixture and you should be smell free!

Maybe you need to change the carpet or deep cleanse it. It could also be the walls if there was a smoker in the house and smoked in those rooms.
